What Makes You Happy?

Figuring out what truly makes you happy is no easy task. This is true throughout life, but is particularly fitting in retirement, when people find themselves in the midst of a new social dynamic with more free time than ever. The question quickly becomes: What do I want and need in life to be happy and content, and to feel a sense of purpose?

These questions and more will be addressed at our seminar here at Village on the Cannon Thursday, March 13th from 9 a.m. until noon.

Our Speakers are:
The Rev. Dr. Reid Zimmerman. Dr. Zimmerman will lead the group through a conversaton that examines mind, body, and spirit wellness as it relates to individuals, families, and the broader community. With more than 25 years of leadership experience, Zimmermen, an educator and consultant, recently served as the executive director of the Minnesota Senior Federation.

Dr. Bruce Roberts, professor emeritus, Dept. of Psychology, St. Olaf College.
Dr. Roberts has an extenseive background in positive psychology that includes research and instruction. He will discuss why positive emotions are important to all of us and how we might find well-being in retirement and beyond. Dr. Roberts taught psychology at St. Olaf for 33 years and is actively involved in the greater Northfield community.

Christine Naylor, Guild Member, University of MN Center for Spirituality and Healing.
As a leader for the Center's Purpose Project Workshops, Ms. Naylor will guide the group in having courageous conversations about meaning and purpose in the second half of life. She will be sharing tools and materials from the Center's Purpose Project Workshop.

Retirement is sterotypically thought to be a time of contentment and relaxation, but we've learned many actually find themselves struggling with a loss of identity and lack of structure. In retirement, individuals go through diifferent periods of adjustment. From early retirement and adjusting to your new freedom, to later when we face lifestyle changes and downsizing. We continually need to evaluate our situations to truly understand what makes us happy at the stage we are in.
