Accessibility features

Village On The Cannon is designed to comply with and support the Minnesota
Accessibility Code and includes the following features:
- Accessible route of travel from the sidewalk to the
building.
- Disabled access parking stalls on the surface parking
lot adjacent to the main entrance. One of these stalls is sized for
a full-size van.
- Two disables-access parking stalls in the parking garage
for residents.
- Two fully-accessible units with features that allow
the residents of these units to navigate their home in a wheelchair
by in providing adequate clearance at each side of door, and 5 ft turning
radius clearance in kitchen and one bathroom per unit. Units also have
lower counters and pull-under space for wheelchair access to sinks and
counter surfaces. Grab bars are provided in these units.
- Visual and audible alarm systems to address the needs
of the hearing or sight impaired.
- Common area and features designed for wheelchair access
- Elevators conveniently provided at each end of the
parking, connecting the parking level with all levels of housing.
- All units that are not initially fully accessible are
designed to be adapted to provide an enhanced degree of facility for
people with disabilities.
In addition, the following features are among the additional (non-code-required)
elements we have included into the design of Village on the Cannon:
- Covered entry to facilitate drop-off and pick-up in
all weather conditions. Height to fit wheelchair vans.
- Heating elements under the asphalt to melt snow and
ice adjacent to the covered entry.
- Power-assisted entry doors in the lobby.
- Adjacent Assisted Living facility for potential access
to nursing care.
- Fully lit walkways and parking lots
- Gurney clearance size elevator
- Wide corridors, made even wider at unit entries.
- 3-foot wide doors throughout all units.
- Private decks designed with low thresholds to enhance
access.
- Raised outlets and lowered switches and thermostats
- Low windowsills for views to be enjoyed from bed and
couch.
- Accessible hardware on doors and cabinets
- Dishwashers are raised to ease loading and unloading
without bending down
- Large pot drawers are provided in the kitchens to increase
utility and aid in access to the lower cabinets.
- Upper cabinets mounted at a lowered height to facilitate
reach into cabinets
- Stoves with control knobs on the front for easy reach
- Out swinging bathroom doors where possible for safety
and access
- All unit bathrooms are designed with blocking in the
walls to facilitate the future addition of grab bars
- 5 ft wide shower stalls & toilets with 17"
high seats
- Single lever faucets
Where possible, we have taken into consideration the needs of people
of any age, to have their housing adapted to them rather than the individual
compromised by their housing.
